Tottenham Hotspur are preparing to break their transfer record for the second summer in a row as they attempt to put a dismal 2024/25 season behind them and give Ange Postecoglou the tools to rebuild a flagging squad. The North London side currently languish in 15th in the Premier League, with six games left to salvage pride, and a Europa League run offering the only real hope of redemption.
Chairman Daniel Levy is reportedly ready to back Postecoglou with serious spending power this summer, and Spurs have now identified Wolves forward Matheus Cunha as a potential marquee signing. The Brazilian has impressed in a struggling Wolves side and could cost at least £65 million – a fee that would eclipse Tottenham’s current record signing, Dominic Solanke, who arrived from Bournemouth last summer for the same amount.
Solanke’s impact has been underwhelming. Eleven goals in 36 appearances across all competitions is not the return Spurs hoped for when they brought in the striker, and his inconsistency has mirrored the team’s broader failings throughout a chaotic campaign. While Solanke hasn’t flopped outright, Tottenham know they need more firepower if they are to return to the top end of the Premier League next season.
That’s where Cunha comes in. The 25-year-old has scored 14 league goals this term and has been Wolves’ standout performer in what’s been another turbulent campaign for the Midlands side. Tottenham are not alone in their admiration, however, with Arsenal, Manchester United and Newcastle also credited with interest. Any potential deal is complicated by the fact Cunha only signed a new contract extension in February, tying him to Molineux until 2029. That puts Wolves in a strong negotiating position — and Levy knows he may have to dig deep to get his man.
Still, all the signs suggest the player himself is open to a move. Cunha recently posted a cryptic message on Instagram that hinted at unrest, writing: “Time to be happy, I will follow my dreams, not yours… So stay cool.” That post sparked a clash with some Wolves supporters online, with Cunha then responding directly to fan-channel Talking Wolves, stating: “Do you know what you want? For people to not like me here, unfortunately I’m going to the field to solve the problem of your favourite club. I’m not here looking for alternatives to be someone important. Fans root for their own, they don’t create misfortunes all the time.”
While passionate, the comments only add fuel to speculation that the forward could be heading for the exit door this summer. Many see the new contract as a tactical move between Cunha and Wolves — a way of ensuring the club can extract maximum value for their star man, rather than a long-term commitment.
Tottenham are desperate for attacking inspiration, and Cunha’s blend of pace, directness and flair fits the bill. He would provide competition and support for Solanke, and perhaps more crucially, could help reignite a fanbase that has grown disillusioned after a painful season. The 4-2 defeat to Wolves on Sunday was yet another reminder of Spurs’ fragility — and their need for players capable of delivering when it counts.
Europa League success would certainly lift the mood in North London, but with a daunting second leg away at Eintracht Frankfurt looming, that path is far from guaranteed. Regardless of how the rest of the season plays out, it’s clear Levy is preparing for major surgery on the squad — and Matheus Cunha may just be the headline act of Tottenham’s latest rebuild.
