While Heurelho Gomes arrived at White Hart Lane with a blistering reputation back in 2008, it would be fair to say that he has experienced a somewhat turbulent tenure at the club. In fact, having been frozen out last year following the signing of Brad Friedal, many people thought that Gomes’ days were numbered. However, the Brazilian claims that following the departure of Harry Redknapp, he now wants to try and prove himself to the next Spurs manager.

As well as losing his position as first choice shot stopper, Gomes also struggled to make the substitutes bench. Harry Redknapp tended to prefer Brad Friedal and Carlo Cudicini as his No.1 and No.2 respectively, meaning that Gomes even faced a battle to make the reserve squad. Altogether, Gomes failed to make one appearance for Tottenham during the 2011/12 campaign.

There have been numerous rumours focussing on Gomes’ future over recent months and at one point in January it appeared as though the former xx man was on the verge of leaving. However, it now appears as though the 31-year-old has reconsidered his options, telling The Sun, “It was a hard season. I was desperate to leave. Now things have changed as the manager left last week. I want to return to the national team but I have to play first.”

Gomes’ reassessment of his situation is probably not going to sit well with the majority of Spurs supporters. Even though he joined the club in a big money deal from PSV, Gomes made frequent mistakes and was ridiculed by many as his performances continued to deteriorate. Many people thought that Redknapp stuck with the Brazilian for far too long in the first place, yet he finally took action twelve months ago when he brought in Friedal to act as first choice.
