After experiencing such a successful loan spell at Swansea last season, there have been rumours surrounding the future of Steven Caulker throughout the summer. However, it appears as all speculation has now been put to bed, with Caulker putting pen to paper on a new four year contract at White Hart Lane.

Newspaper reports have been linking other clubs with the signature of the 20-year-old, who was something of a revelation at the Liberty Stadium last term. In fact, it was widely thought that new Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers would table a bid to work with Caulker again, with figures as high as £8m being branded about. However, it now appears as though the only way Caulker will leave the club is if Andre Villas-Boas allows him to depart on loan.

One club who will be hoping that does occur is Swansea. It was thought that prior to Harry Redknapp’s dismissal, the Swans had agreed in principle to take Caulker on loan for the rest of next season. Reports are now suggesting that Villas-Boas is required to work with a smaller squad this term, meaning that Caulker could actually have a future in the Spurs’ first team this year. Furthermore, if Ledley King decides not to continue playing, AVB could be short of central defenders.

While speculation will continue to grow on Caulker’s short-term future, he will be concentrating on representing Team GB at the Olympics this summer. Having been named in the initial 35-man squad, it was confirmed that the England U-21 international would be included in the full squad earlier this week. He was obviously thrilled to be part of Stuart Pearce’s plans, saying, “I’m delighted to be part of it and the fact it’s here in Britain means it will be a huge event and something I’ll no doubt look back on for many, many years.”
