It has been one of the most talked about transfers for weeks, with player, agent and both clubs giving their opinion on the deal to the press. However, following a whole summer of negotiations, it finally looks as though Jan Vertonghen will become a Tottenham player after a financial was agreed with Ajax.

Vertonghen has made no secret of the fact that his heart has been set on a move to White Hart Lane, while both Spurs and Ajax have been preparing their supporters for the potential transfer. However, despite the press coverage, there have been disagreements over the financial package with Ajax understood to value the defender much higher than Tottenham. Furthermore, it has also come to light that Vertonghen has been at loggerheads with the Dutch outfit about a financial clause in his contract.

However, it now looks as though the matter has been completely sorted, with Vertonghen poised to pen to paper on a contract at Spurs as long as he passes a medical. In a statement on the official website, Spurs said, “We are delighted to announce that we have reached agreement with Ajax for the transfer of Jan Vertonghen, subject to a medical.”

As has been the case throughout the transfer, Vertonghen has also spoken to the press. He told Sky Sports, “I’m glad I’m a Tottenham player right now and I’m looking forward to playing for the club,” he told Sky Sports News. I heard that Harry Redknapp really wanted me to play for Tottenham, but now it’s Andre Villas-Boas. To me, that doesn’t matter. I just want to play for the club and I hope I can please the fans at the club.”

It is thought that Spurs will pay around £9m for the player, who has established himself as one of the most impressive central defenders in the Dutch league having been named as Ajax’s Player of the Season last term.
