Even though Brendan Rodgers has claimed that money was behind Gyfi Sigurdsson’s decision to snub Liverpool and join Spurs, the player has now stated that this is not the case at all. Instead, the former Reading forward believes that Tottenham have a bigger chance of success than Liverpool and once their interest became apparent, his mind was made up.

The whole Sigurdsson transfer affair has certainly been a prolonged process. Even though the Icelandic international appeared to be signing at Swansea at first, Brendan Rodgers’ appointment at Liverpool soon put an end to that deal. Then, when Sigurdsson appeared to be moving to Anfield, Spurs stepped in and grabbed the 22-year-old in a shock £8m switch. This was all negotiated despite the fact that Andre Villas-Boas had not been officially confirmed as the new manager at White Hart Lane.

However, while many bitter Reds fans have accused Sigurdsson of being too greedy, he says that money was not a motivating factor at all. Speaking to reporters, the player said, “There’s nothing wrong with Liverpool but there’s everything right about Tottenham. Look at where Spurs have finished in the last few years, compared to Liverpool, and look at the squad here. It’s a fantastic team and with the new training ground, possibility of a new stadium, it’s exciting times. Spurs are a fantastic club, a club with a lot of additions, with players who are world-class.”

Even though Villas-Boas had not been appointed when the transfer of Sigurdsson was arranged, it is understood that he is a massive admirer of the former Hoffenheim man. This should not come as a surprise, with Sigurdsson attracting interest from some of Europe’s elite following such a promising loan spell with Swansea last year. The Iceman managed seven goals in just eighteen appearances at the Liberty Stadium and such form has undoubtedly contributed to this move to Tottenham.
