Assou-Ekotto tells Lloris to keep quiet

Considering the fact that Spurs put up such a long-winded fight to try and lure Hugo Lloris to White Hart Lane during the summer, the situation that the player currently finds himself in is quite remarkable. After revealing his disappointment about not being the club’s No.1, Lloris has now been told that he does not deserve his place in the team by defender Benoit Assou-Ekotto.

Spurs made no secret of the fact that Lloris was at the top of their shopping list over the whole summer. Club officials have desperately been trying to find a long-term replacement for Brad Friedel, with the American now 41-years-old and approaching the final days of his career. However, despite his advancing years, few can doubt that the former Blackburn shot-stopper is still one of the best players in his position in the top flight. This meant that Andre Villas-Boas was left with a massive decision following the capture of Lloris – and promptly announced that he would stick with Friedel for the time being.

As you would expect, such comments did not go down with the Frenchman who immediately revealed his disappointment to the press. However, defender Assou-Ekotto believes that AVB has made the right decision and has said that Lloris will simply have to fight for his place in the team. Speaking to RMC Sports, the player said, “It will not be easy for Lloris at Tottenham. Like any top player, he will be judged on his ability and performance. Even if Lloris is the number one in the France squad, that does not guarantee him that title at Spurs. Hugo will need a lot of work to inspire the confidence of the coach.”

With Friedel continuing to perform to such standards, it certainly remains to be seen how the whole situation plays out and it could be yet another massive test of AVB’s unconvincing man-management skills.
