Spurs have made no secret of the fact that Hugo Lloris has been at the top of their wish list for some time and Andre Villas-Boas only managed to complete the capture on transfer deadline day. Following on from the acquisition, France legend Bixente Lizarazu claims that he is surprised at the transfer and says that he thought a club of a higher standing would have swooped for the 25-year-old.
Even though Spurs have relied heavily on Brad Friedel through the last few years, the fact the American is now 41-years-old means that the club have desperately been searching for a replacement this summer. There have been rumours about Lloris throughout the last few months and many were worried that the deal would not come to fruition after Tottenham appeared reluctant to meet Lyon’s asking place. However, the transfer finally took place on deadline day and the player was named in the Spurs squad from the weekend game against Norwich.
Nevertheless, while the vast majority of Spurs fans have welcomed the signing with open arms, one man seems quite disappointed. Speaking to the media following the move, former France defender Bixente Lizarazu says that he is very surprised at Lloris’ choice of destination. He said, “I imagined a club of a higher standing for Hugo Lloris. For me, Tottenham is not more powerful than Lyon. The experience in England is necessary, but I thought he would go to a top European club. For me, Tottenham is not a top European club.”
Following on from the above, Lizarazu might be slightly surprised to see Lloris start on the bench in Saturday’s draw with Norwich. Moreover, even though Spurs didn’t manage to net the three points, the experienced Friedel is widely tipped to keep his place following a solid performance against the Canaries.
