Mauricio Pochettino has expressed his desire to return to Tottenham Hotspur at some point in the future, despite currently being under contract with the United States national team until the 2026 World Cup. The Argentine coach, who is regarded as one of Tottenham’s greatest modern managers, was dismissed in 2019 after leading Spurs to the Champions League final and achieving three consecutive top-three Premier League finishes.
Since his departure, Pochettino has managed at Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea but maintains a positive relationship with Spurs chairman Daniel Levy, hinting at the possibility of a return. Although Tottenham is currently languishing in 14th place under Ange Postecoglou, heading for their lowest finish since 2008, Pochettino’s affection for the club remains strong.
Reflecting on his departure, Pochettino shared with Sky Sports that he has always had a desire to return to Spurs. “When I left the club, I always remember one interview I said I would like one day to come back to Tottenham,” he said. “And that is of course… I am in the USA, I am not going to talk about that. But what I said then, still after six years or five years, I still feel in my heart that, yes, I would like one day to come back. We see the timing, like Daniel said.”
Pochettino’s bond with Levy remains intact, with the two staying in contact regularly since his departure. Despite the emotional and professional challenges of their time together, Pochettino emphasized that they continue to share a good relationship. “He is always there and he’s going to be there,” Pochettino explained. “It’s another thing to take professional decisions. It’s true after nearly six years with all that we lived together, it was tough because of all the ups and downs and emotional things that we lived.”
Pochettino’s departure from Spurs was marked by both highs and lows, and he acknowledged the difficulty of separating personal feelings from professional decisions. However, he remains grateful for the experience, stating, “I’ve seen always it’s difficult in football that that doesn’t affect all this type of situation in your relationship. For us, we split very well. One thing was professional, another personal, and now, like the day after we left Tottenham, we keep always a very, very good relationship.”
While his current focus is on his role with the U.S. men’s national team, the door seems open for a potential future return to Tottenham, and Pochettino’s comments have rekindled speculation about a possible reunion with the North London club. As Spurs continue to struggle, Pochettino’s words may be a reminder to the club’s supporters of what could be possible if he were to return in the right circumstances.
