Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou reaffirmed his commitment to entertaining football after his side’s 2-2 Europa League draw with Roma. Despite the disappointment of conceding a late equalizer, Postecoglou maintained his belief in prioritizing style and excitement over pragmatic results.
Spurs were poised for victory following first-half goals from Son Heung-min and Brennan Johnson, which overturned Evan N’Dicka’s equalizer. However, they failed to capitalize on a series of chances and hit the woodwork three times, ultimately allowing Mats Hummels to score a stoppage-time equalizer.
The result sees Tottenham sitting ninth in the Europa League league phase, currently outside the automatic qualification spots for the last 16. Yet, Postecoglou remains steadfast in his philosophy:
“Why can’t it just be entertaining? Isn’t it why we all come? Would you really prefer us to sketch out a couple of 0-0 draws and a 1-0 win and we get through? I don’t know. I’d like to think when you tune into us you’ll be entertained.”
The game at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium provided plenty of drama. Son opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the fifth minute after Hummels fouled Pape Sarr. Roma equalized through N’Dicka, who headed home Paulo Dybala’s free-kick.
Johnson restored Spurs’ lead in the 33rd minute, converting from a Dejan Kulusevski cutback shortly after Stephan El Shaarawy had a Roma goal ruled out for offside.
The second half saw Roma threaten repeatedly, with two more goals disallowed for offside and Angelino striking the crossbar with a powerful volley. Spurs themselves came close to extending their lead, with Pedro Porro and Dominic Solanke both hitting the woodwork.
Fraser Forster’s late heroics in goal seemed to have secured the win, but Roma’s persistence paid off when Hummels converted Angelino’s cross in added time.
