Tottenham Hotspur’s disastrous season continues to spiral downwards as they desperately try to salvage what’s left of their campaign. With a spot in the domestic cups already lost and the club sitting a disappointing 14th in the Premier League, things have only worsened over the past few months.
The pressure is mounting on manager Ange Postecoglou, with reports growing that his future is uncertain following a concerning run of three wins in their last nine games. The squad has been plagued by injuries, and key first-team players have consistently failed to meet the expected level of performance. Notably, stars like Micky van de Ven, Dominic Solanke, and Guglielmo Vicario have all spent significant time on the sidelines, contributing to the club’s ongoing struggles.
Another major concern for Tottenham is the future of World Cup-winning defender Cristian Romero, who has been a mainstay in Spurs’ defence since joining from Atalanta in 2022. Romero, known for his aggressive and physical style of play, had previously formed a solid partnership with Van de Ven, making Spurs’ defence one of the most formidable in the Premier League. However, injuries and the team’s overall poor form have meant the duo has missed most of this season, leaving the defence vulnerable.
Romero has now missed over half of Tottenham’s league games this season, and speculation about his future is intensifying. Atletico Madrid has reportedly shown significant interest in the Argentine, with Sky Sports claiming the Spanish club is pushing hard for a summer transfer. The 26-year-old has two years remaining on his contract, but sources indicate that Romero is actively seeking a move away from North London, with journalist Matteo Moretto stating that the player “is willing to do everything” to leave.
Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy paid close to £50 million for Romero in 2022, and he is expected to demand a significant fee to part with the player. Reports suggest that Levy could set the asking price at a staggering €95 million, placing Romero among the most expensive departures in the club’s history, alongside the sales of Harry Kane and Gareth Bale.
Tottenham has a strict policy of only selling players for a substantial profit, and with Romero being their fifth-most expensive signing, Levy will be keen to maximize the club’s return on the investment. This potential sale would leave Postecoglou with a major headache, as Romero’s departure would leave a significant hole in the defence. Spurs are already short on defensive options, with Radu Dragusin sidelined for a long period due to an ACL injury and Kevin Danso’s recent injury further limiting available personnel.
With the summer transfer window approaching, Tottenham will need to act fast to replace Romero and address other areas of concern if they are to rebuild ahead of next season.
