Spurs fine Modric over absence

It appears as though Luka Modric is all but certain to leave White Hart Lane this summer, after the Croatian international decided not to turn up to the club’s tour of America. This has resulted in club officials fining the 26-year-old two weeks’ wages.

Modric has been strongly linked with a move away from the club this summer but after holding back on a transfer last year, it was hoped that he would conduct the new saga in a dignified manner. However, it now looks as though the transfer could become an ugly affair, with the player desperate to force through a move.

There were worries when the former Dinamo Zagreb failed to report to training on Friday, yet the situation escalated when he was then absent for the plane that departed to the USA. Andre Villas-Boas has been quick to give his take on the situation, indicating that the player will regret such a course of action. He said, “I think Modric is wrong. This will go against him. He has worsened the situation with what he’s doing and now the chairman is very angry.”

It is understood that there are many suitors of Modric, although few can even come close to the value that Spurs have placed on him. It’s thought that Daniel Levy is looking for a figure around £40m, yet the closest he has received to that is one of approximately £27m from Real Madrid. While Manchester United and Chelsea are other admirers, it is not known whether or not they would be prepared to fork out such a sum.

Instead, Real’s main competition could be from French outfit Paris Saint-Germain, who have the finances following a big-money takeover a couple of years ago.
Following this latest turn of events, Spurs fans will be bracing themselves for Modric to hand in a formal transfer request.
