SPURS SECURE OPTION TO BUY JOHNNY CARDOSO

Tottenham Hotspur have negotiated an option to buy United States midfielder Johnny Cardoso next summer, according to Real Betis president Ángel Haro. This agreement comes as part of the deal that saw Spurs offload Giovani Lo Celso to the Spanish club last week. During those discussions, Betis accepted an offer from Tottenham, giving them the option to trigger a €25 million (£21 million) buyout clause for Cardoso.

Cardoso, 22, has attracted attention from multiple European clubs following his impressive performances for Betis since joining from Brazilian side Internacional last season. Born in the United States to Brazilian parents, he moved to South America as a child and developed his football career there before making the jump to European football.

The agreed option allows Tottenham to activate the clause within a two-week window in the summer of 2025. Should Spurs choose not to move during that time frame, other clubs would be free to bid for the talented midfielder.

“Johnny is a player who is of interest not only to Tottenham, but to many other teams,” Haro explained. “He has great potential, and within the Gio operation, Tottenham asked for an option to buy for a value that was important and interesting for us, and we agreed.”

Cardoso, who has earned 15 caps for the U.S. national team, broke into the senior game at Internacional before moving to Betis. With his profile continuing to rise, Tottenham’s interest reflects his growing status as a player to watch in the coming seasons.
