Tottenham brought an end to their winless run of three matches in the Premier league with a 2-0 success over Southampton this weekend.
There were several reasons for manager Mauricio Pochettino to celebrate this victory. Not only this win earned the club three points, but it also elevated them back into the top four ahead of Manchester United. Tottenham have had the target of finishing in the top four for quite a while, but the poor form of the last few weeks was threatening to destroy their hopes for yet another campaign. The poor form started with the draw against Chelsea.
Spurs then suffered a shock 1-1 draw against West Brom away from home while an even bigger disappointment in the form of a home loss against league strugglers Newcastle United came their way. Luckily, main rivals like Manchester City and Manchester United were unable to take advantage of this poor form since they were also dropping points in their games. Spurs, though, have managed to take advantage of the situation by getting a clean sheet and a win against Southampton. Striker Harry Kane scored his first league goals in almost a month to help Spurs get this win. Dele Alli scored the other goal just after three minutes.
“We push them to be brave. It is difficult to play every game at a good level. They are very young but we are very proud of them. I believe they have a very good squad and I think it is a negative period,” said the Spurs manager. “Newcastle was probably the kick up the butt we needed. We had drawn a couple of games before that too and maybe we were getting a bit complacent. That maybe woke us up a bit,” said striker Kane, who scored his 14th goal of the season.
