Ange Postecoglou has revealed his reasons for adding goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario to Tottenham’s leadership group ahead of this season. The Italy international joined Spurs on a five-year deal from Empoli in June and quickly established himself as a key performer in his first season at the club.
The 27-year-old was instrumental on Thursday night, making several crucial saves as Spurs secured their second clean sheet of the season with a 3-0 victory over Qarabag in the Europa League group stage. Postecoglou was full of praise for his goalkeeper’s performance, noting, “He was [great], but he has been great since the day he arrived.”
Despite his current form, Vicario faced criticism in the latter half of last season. Some observers felt he was being physically targeted by opposing players during corners and set-pieces, raising questions about his ability to cope with such pressure. However, Postecoglou downplayed this criticism, stating, “Criticism is just part of the nature of football these days. We have had a few under the spotlight.”
Postecoglou’s decision to include Vicario in the leadership group this season stems from his positive attitude and dedication to improving both on and off the pitch. “I included him in the leadership [group] this year because I have just seen his growth,” Postecoglou explained. “He is one of those guys who is really positive. He comes in every day wanting to work; he comes in on his days off wanting to work.”
The manager highlighted Vicario’s exemplary nature, both as a professional and a person, making him a natural fit for a leadership role within the squad. “He is a great example for everyone and a great human being as well. I thought he could add something to our leadership group,” Postecoglou added. Vicario’s efforts were recognized on Thursday when he was handed the captain’s armband. “It’s great for him to get the armband last night, and I thought he rose to the occasion. He was big for us.”
While Vicario hasn’t been required to make many crucial saves in the initial matches of the season, Postecoglou acknowledged that his contributions were vital against Qarabag. “He hasn’t had to make too many big saves in the first few games for us, but we needed him for a couple last night, and he was great,” the manager noted.
Tottenham have been in strong form recently, recording three consecutive wins since their defeat in the North London derby to Arsenal earlier this month. They now look ahead to their next challenge, a visit to Old Trafford to face Manchester United on Sunday, with Vicario likely to play a key role in their pursuit of another positive result.
